If James Brown is the “Godfather of Soul”, then Martha High is the “Goddess of Soul”: High's merits as one of Brown's most trusted allies and as part of his historic contribution to the history of soul music are beyond question. For 32 years, longer than anyone else, she was on stage with him. Accompanying him at the historic Boston Garden concert the night after Martin Luther King's assassination in April 1968, where his sheer stage presence and positive message prevented riots. At his side on the courageous trip to Vietnam to entertain the American troops, as well as at the “Rumble In The Jungle” concert before the legendary boxing match between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali in Kingshasa. She is still Maceo Parker's lead singer when Brown's saxophonist calls. But Martha High has now also left her own mark with her Soul Cookers. Soul from old school to new school, no one can fire it off more authentically, no one can celebrate “The Magic of Christmas” more funkily than she can. Clear the stage!
